GUARD
Somebody! Jeanne has escaped!
Jeanne has escaped!!

[carriage]

MASKED MAN
It's all right now.

JEANNE
We're heading north. Where are you taking me ?

MASKED MAN
A monastery in Severne.

JEANNE
Who are you? Why did you help me?

MASKED MAN
You're a heroine. It's a waste to keep you in prison for the rest of your life.
Besides, there's a job that I (definitely) want you to do.

JEANNE
Who the hell are you?!

MASKED MAN
It's better that you don't know my name.
I helped you out. You do the work I ask. Anything wrong with that?

JEANNE
Oui, Monsieur.
All right. (or, "I understand.")

[opening title]

{Episode 24 "Adieu, My Youth"}

[Paris]

CITIZENS
Is it true that she escaped?!
She's done it. Just what you'd expect of Jeanne.
Maybe it was the Queen who helped Jeanne escape.
No way.
Sure, it could be!
Jeanne was blamed for everything in the Necklace Affair.
So even that Queen had qualms of conscience.
But some rumors say it's the nobles who hate the royal family
(who helped her escape).
They say that Versailles is falling apart.

ROSALIE
Sister...
Where are you Jeanne?
No, you could be anywhere.
Only if you stay the same (/remain the way you were), flying freely.
Mme. Polignac!

POLIGNAC
It's been a while, Mademoiselle Rosalie.
We haven't met each other since Charlotte died.

[flashback of Charlotte]

POLIGNAC
You seem fine, I'm glad.

ROSALIE
Please leave me alone.

POLIGNAC
I've come to meet you as your mother.

ROSALIE
Please stop!
I don't consider you my mother!

POLIGNAC
You still hate me, don't you.
That's natural. Although it was an accident, I killed Nicole la Molier,
your foster mother. But I'm the mother who bore you (/gave birth to you).
That hasn't changed!

ROSALIE
I'm just beginning get over my hatred for you.
That means, I'm trying to forget (the fact) that you bore me.
So, I never want to see you again.

POLIGNAC
That makes me very sad, Rosalie.
Please, come to the Polignac estate.
I'm alone since Charlotte died.
I want you to live with me.

ROSALIE
No thank you!

CITIZENS
Hey, did you hear that fugitive Jeanne published a book?
A book?
Nobody knows the whereabouts of the publisher nor the author, so called
the "secret publication".
Wow, what a woman!
Now we know that Jeanne has a firm supporter.
Then neither the military nor the police will never be able to catch her no
matter how desperate they become. Hurrah!

VENDOR
Read all about it!
"The Memoirs of Jeanne Valois"!
The first book (/volume?) has all the details of (the truth of) the
Necklace Affairs!
And that's not all! The second, third volumes, and more are scheduled to
be published (one after another)! But first, you have to read Volume 1!
Thank you. Thank you, thank you.

ANDRE
"The Memoirs of Jeanne Valois Volume 1: Commentary on the Scandal of Marie
Antoinette Part 1: the Catalog of the Queen's Lovers." (Wow,) look at this.
"A Beauty in Male Attire, Colonel Oscar Francois de Jarjeyes". You're
listed right after Mme. Polignac.
Jeanne Valois...what a woman.
[lit, he said "She's really done it."]
Rosalie?

ROSALIE takes away the book from Andre
I'm sorry, Lady Oscar!

OSCAR
It doesn't matter how I feel. (or, I'm not the matter of concern.)
What matters is the (ordinary) people who believe in such contents (/who
take such contents seriously).
Their feeling toward the royal family, and Lady Antoinette.

[cabinet meeting]

CHAIRMAN
We must take care of it as soon as possible!
No matter how much we impose the ban, the books are bought and sold in
bars, back allies, or even in the sewers.
Minister of Public Safety !
What the hell are you doing even after mobilizing the army (/military)
(personnel) for a mere escaped convict?!

MINISTER
Well...As you know, the commoners all shut up and won't even cooperate in
providing information when Jeanne is involved.

NOBLE
We have no choice but to ask for the cooperation of the royal family.

CHAIRMAN
Hmm, that is?

NOBLE
Request the dispatch of the Royal Guards. This is clearly a crisis for the
royal family, is it not? The Royal Guards have the duty to protect the
(peace of) royal family!

CHAIRMAN
All right, Vice Minister of State Affairs! Hand this command document
at once to the Royal Guard Regiment Commander, and tell (her) it's
the decision of the cabinet meeting (/it's the cabinet's decision).

{Severne Monastery}

NICOLAS
It's selling like crazy!
A professional writer would be pale with envy. (?)
I never knew that you had such a talent, eh, Jeanne?

JEANNE
Stop it, Nicolas.
Don't be ecstatic over such a stupid thing.
No matter how much money we get from the sales of the book, we can't even
set a foot outside of this monastery!

NICOLAS
Well...but only for a bit longer.
Didn't Monsieur say... that he'll make arrangements for us?

JEANNE
Don't be unrealistic.
We don't even know who exactly that man is.
We never know how much we can trust him.

JEANNE
I'm sort of...getting tired (of all this).

[flashback]

ROSALIE
This ring is from Rosalie; it's her mother's keepsake.
And Rosalie said, "I can't be happier, so I want you to keep this."
[lit. "I have plenty of happiness, so this is for my Sister Jeanne."]

NANNY
Mademoiselle, why do you have to chase after a mere escaped convict?

OSCAR
It's been decided by the cabinet, Nanny.
I have to follow orders.

NANNY
And the convict is Mademoiselle Rosalie's...

OSCAR
We don't know Jeanne's whereabouts.
It's not yet certain whether I'll be the one to apprehend her.

ROSALIE
Please be careful.

NANNY
Mademoiselle Rosalie!
A letter has just arrived for you.
It says only "J" as the sender.
I haven't told anyone--for someone talkative like me--not even to Lady
Oscar!

JEANNE's LETTER
Rosalie, YOU keep the ring.
Because right now, I live happily.
---From Saverne.

ROSALIE
She's lying!
She DOES NOT live happily.
I've never seen my sister laughing from the bottom of her heart since
we're kids.
Someday (even if it's only for once), I wish I'll be able to see her face
like that.

POLIGNAC
How are you, Rosalie?
You still don't feel like coming back to your mother's, to the Polignac
family?

ROSALIE
I can never feel like that.
Excuse me!

POLIGNAC
Wait, Rosalie.
You have no choice but to do what I tell you.

ROSALIE
That can't be...

POLIGNAC
If you don't, Oscar Francois will be arrested for being involved in the case.
First of all, Jeanne's husband, Nicolas, was a member of the Royal Guard
Regiment that Colonel Oscar heads. Second, nobody in the
royal family has noticed it yet, but Colonel Oscar has adopted you,
Jeanne's (younger) sister. Having the criminals among her Royal
Guard subordinates, and the sister is at her house. These are enough for
anyone to imagine that Colonel Oscar was among Jeanne's group. If you
don't call me your Mother and don't come to the Polignac family, I'll tell
this to the authorities and make them public! Now Rosalie,
call me your "Mother"!

[royal guards attacking gypsies]

OSCAR
Charge!!

GUARD
Stop!

GUARD
It's not Jeanne, Ma'am. Only a woman chief of thieves.

OSCAR
We've fallen for another false lead.

ANDRE
Oscar, wasn't it better (for you) that it was false (information)?
But traveling day after day wears us down
...for the troops, as well as you and me.

[Rosalie sees Oscar worn out]

POLIGNAC
Colonel Oscar was also ordered to capture (/arrest) Jeanne Valois,
wasn't she?
She won't be able to catch her even after years. On the contrary, wouldn't
she even help her escape?
It's about time I informed the Minister of Justice that a Royal Guard
Commander is sheltering Jeanne Valois's sister.

ROSALIE
Don't! Not that, please.

POLIGNAC
The more time it takes to capture Jeanne, the more suspicion Colonel Oscar
draws.

ROSALIE
I cannot put any more burden on Lady Oscar!

POLIGNAC
So?

ROSALIE
I will do whatever you tell me to do.
Mother...

POLIGNAC
(Fine,) good girl, Rosalie.

MASKED MAN
Jeanne finished writing the series of books?

HUNCHBACK
Yes, Sir. All five complete volumes of "The Memoirs of Jeanne Valois".

MASKED MAN
She's of no more use to us, then.

HUNCHBACK
What would you like me to do, Sir?
If you'd like, I'll go to Saverne as soon as tonight and...

MASKED MAN
No need to hurry.
We don't have to get our own hands dirty.
There are plenty of ways (to choose from).

[at Jarjeyes']

ANDRE
Oscar, don't be perplexed. Rosalie is...

ROSALIE
I...
I'd like to say good-bye to Lady Oscar.

POLIGNAC
Go ahead. But keep it short.

ROSALIE
Lady Oscar, I thank you for taking care of me for such a long time.
I'm going back to the Polignac family.

OSCAR
I haven't heard any of this!
How come, all of a sudden

ROSALIE
I've been thinking from before, that I should go back to my Mother someday.

OSCAR
Something must have happened.
What happened behind my back?!

ROSALIE
I must say good-bye!

OSCAR
Rosalie, wait!

OSCAR
All right, I won't ask anymore.
Mme. Polignac is your real mother.
Promise me that you'll live happily.

ROSALIE
...Yes, I will!

[Oscar hands Rosalie a rosary?]

OSCAR
She was (such) a nice girl...as if she were spring breeze.

ROSALIE in her mind
Adieu, my youth.
Adieu, my happiness.
Adieu, my Lady Oscar...

NANNY
Mademoiselle?
Mademoiselle Rosalie handed me this a short while ago.

OSCAR
It's a letter from Jeanne!
Jeanne is in Saverne...
Rosalie... how must have she felt...
She didn't have to do this!
Andre, don't tell anybody about this. Let me think on this for a while.

ANDRE
I understand.

MESSENGER
Colonel Oscar Francois de Jarjeyes!
The Minister of Public Safety calls you! Please come to Versailles Palace!

MINISTER
We have just been informed from an influential (/powerful?) source that
Jeanne Valois is (hiding) at a monastery in Saverne. Colonel, you take
your platoon (and head) to Saverne immediately.

ANDRE
And you took the mission?

OSCAR
I did. Now that Jeanne's whereabouts is known, even if I don't go there,
somebody will. If she is to be arrested (/captured? because she's already
been arrested before) anyway, the only thing I can do (for her) is to make
an arrest with my hands.
...so I decided.
[It's an incomplete sentence.]

HUNCHBACK
It's a royal guard platoon, led by Colonel Oscar, heading for Saverne.

MASKED MAN?
Poor Jeanne. She'd never imagine that we'd betray her.

[monastery]

JEANNE
Mother Mary! I'm feeling good tonight!

NICOLAS
Je-Jeanne! Come here!

JEANNE
What's the matter?

NICOLAS
There's something going on outside.

NICOLAS
It's the Royal Guards! Damn, we're completely surrounded!

OSCAR
Jeanne Valois! Nicolas de la Motte!
I'm Oscar Francois de Jarjeyes.
We won't use force if you come out peacefully.
Come out, Jeanne! Turn yourself in, Captain la Motte!

NICOLAS
Wh-what should we do, Jeanne?! We're in a pinch!

JEANNE
Don't panic. Act like a man.
When it comes to this, what will be will be!
que sera, sera...

ROYAL GUARD
Commander, we should make an assault!

OSCAR
Wait, not yet.
I'll go (see) there first.

ANDRE
Oscar!

OSCAR
When you hear a gunshot, there's no need to hesitate, make an all-out
attack.
But leave everything to me till then. Nobody interfere. That's an order!

ANDRE
Oscar...

OSCAR
Wait, Captain!
A gunshot is the signal. If you shoot me, everyone will break in (here).

OSCAR
Come with me. If you need to change (your dress), I can wait.

JEANNE
Did... did Rosalie tell you about this place?

OSCAR
Not Rosalie. I swear.

JEANNE
I see. I'm glad (to hear that).
I still had an ally. At least one for someone like me.
Someone I can trust...I'm really glad.

[Nicolas knocks down Oscar]

NICOLAS
Jeanne! I've just come up with a good idea!
We can escape with her as our hostage!

JEANNE
Go alone if you want to escape.
I've had enough.
I'm sort of...tired (of everything/all this).

NICOLAS
What? Why...
ALL RIGHT!
I don't need a hostage if I'm escaping alone!
There's no use to keep her alive!!

[Nicolas chokes Oscar]

OSCAR
Andre...

ANDRE
She called me! Just now...Oscar did call me!

GUARD
Huh?
You're kidding. We didn't hear anything.
Andre! We were ordered to stay here!

ANDRE
"Ordered"? Who cares!

NICOLAS
Die!
[well, he didn't exactly say it but...]

[Jeanne stabs Nicolas ]

JEANNE
Stop!
There's no hope for us even if we kill her!
Instead, I want you to die with me.

ANDRE
Oscar!
Oscar, are you all right, Oscar?!

OSCAR
The cellar...
They both went down to the cellar.
Jeanne intends to die!

[cellar]

ANDRE
This smell...
(It's) gun powder!

JEANNE
Sorry, Nicolas.
I'm sorry. I'll be lonely if I die alone.

NICOLAS
It's OK.
But you were the best woman I ever met.

JEANNE
Really? I'm glad!

[explosion]

NARRATION
So the Necklace Affair ended (/was settled/came to an end/conclusion).
But who helped Jeanne escape and publish the memoir?
Some said it was the King's cousin, Duke Orleans, who secretly
tried to usurp the throne.
But the truth was forever buried along with Jeanne's death into the
dark(ness).

[ending title]
